Clash Royale’s One Year Anniversary Update (Updated x 2)

I admit this blog is dominated by Apple and Formula 1 posts and that I’ve only managed ONE post about gaming so far. That’s not good enough so here’s another. Officially, Clash Royale is over one year old now (the worldwide launch took place on the 2nd of March) but its one year anniversary update is coming tomorrow and it’s one of the, if not the biggest update the game has ever seen. In this post I talk about what’s to come in the update.

As is often the case, we are provided with Sneak Peeks which, in essence, tell us what’s coming in the future update. We’ve had four Sneak Peeks. The first Sneak Peek revealed that a new game mode is coming to Clash Royale, Clan Battle. This new mode entails battling side-by-side with a Clanmate against another clan and will start on the 24th of March. This mode alternates each week with the Clan Chest. So, we’ll have one more Clan Chest and after that we’ll have the new Clan Battle Chest. It’s not a game mode that’s available at anytime unfortunately.

To start a Clan Battle, there will be a new button beside the chest progress bar and it’ll start searching for a Clanmate for you to battle alongside with. Once you start a game, your Clanmates deck will be displayed for a brief amount of time so you can see what cards they have. The King Tower has the same amount of health but instead of one King Tower, there will be two. So, how do you know what card your Clanmate will play? Well, you know when a drag a card to the field, there’s an outline? It’s a similar kind of thing, a small icon of the card will be displayed showing you where your Clanmate will place their card so you can work together. Of course, if you can be in direct contact with them, it’d be even better. Elixir is replenished at a slower rate as there can be, essentially, twice as many cards on the field and if they didn’t modify the replenish rate, it’d be manic.

With the Clan Battle, Crowns are no longer counted towards the Chest, it’s simply based on how many wins you get. If you get one Crown, it counts as one win towards the Chest, if you get three Crowns, it still counts as one win towards the Chest. For example, to win the first tier Chest, you must win two matches. If you manage to get the 10th tier Chest, you can still play during that time until it’s over.

The next Sneak Peek revealed that four new cards are coming to the game with the first card being available on the 24th of March. The new cards are; Bandit, Night Witch, Bats and Heal, that’s right, Heal, something they ruled out but it is coming to the game. The Bandit will be the newest card to makes its debut on the 24th and a new special challenge will be available on the 17th called the Bandit Draft Challenge. Get 12 wins and the card is yours. Something else that is new are one-time rewards. In this challenge only (which FREE to enter) you are awarded a Gold Chest at two wins, 8000 Gold at four wins, 1 Chest at six wins, 25000 Gold at eight wins and the Bandit card itself at 12 wins. The Bandit and Night Witch are new Legendary cards while Bats is a Common card and Heal is a Rare card. The Night Witch and Bats will be available from Arena 8, the Bandit from Arena 9 and Heal from Arena 10.

The third Sneak Peek revealed a new Arena! From tomorrow, the current Legendary Arena will be renamed to Hog Mountain and we’ll have an Arena 11 called Legendary Arena. The new Legendary Arena will be unlocked at 3800 Trophies but most importantly, Legendary cards will still appear in the Shop at 3000 Trophies. The fourth and final Sneak Peak revealed that Leagues are coming to the game. You must have at least 4000 Trophies and there are nine Leagues to climb through. You start at Challenger I and work your way up. The other Leagues are: Challenger II (4300 Trophies), Challenger III (4600 Trophies), Master I (4900 Trophies), Master II (5200 Trophies), Master III (5500 Trophies), Champion (5800 Trophies), Grand Champion (6100 Trophies) and Ultimate Champion (6400 Trophies).

The season will be reset every 30 days as opposed to 14 days. After the 30 days, you’ll be rewarded with one Draft Chest. The further up you get, the better the rewards are. You can also choose which cards you win. 6400 Trophies sounds like a lot (and it is) but you now have 30 days to reach that target so it’s possible. Once you reach a certain League, you’ll be locked into that League and will never drop. For example, if I managed to get 5501 Trophies, I’d find myself in the Master III League but if I dropped below 5500, I’d still get the rewards from the Master III Draft Chest.

Of course, tidbits will be added to the game and I can tell you a few of them right now. When doing Challenges, Crowns you get will now go towards the Clan Chest. We are also expected to see one year anniversary offers in the Shop and a new special offer for reaching Arena 11. The Clan Chest and Clan Battle Chest are also moving to Saturday – Monday as players complained that doing it during the week wasn’t the best idea. You can now view the Tournament Level of cards and it’ll go up or down depending on your level. Max levelled Epics only used to hold one card, now you can hold up to five cards which will allow you to donate more to Clanmates on Epic Sunday. Finally, once you hit overtime in the (new) Legendary Arena, confetti will start falling.

The reason I (and many people) think the update will be released tomorrow is because new balance changes are confirmed to be coming on the 13th and it includes bug fixes for the Executioner and Electro Wizard, both of which require a client-side update (it can’t be done over maintenance).

In my opinion, Clash Royale is one of the best games I’ve ever played on iOS (okay, I agree, it can get frustrating at times) and from tomorrow it’s going to get even better.

UPDATE ONE:

The update is now live and as expected, there are a few smaller changes. One feature which is quite big in my opinion is the ability to spectate Clanmates from the Info tab within your Clan. You can watch them live and even cheer them on (or the opponent) by clicking new buttons on the right. The interface of the whole game has been tweaked to look better, if players are in a League, it’ll be displayed next to their name, you can sort friends by status or score and there are limited time special offers.

To celebrate your progress to the (new) Legendary Arena, there is a one-time special offer available which gives you 100,000 Gold, an Ultimate Champion Draft Chest which guarantees 1 Legendary, 50 Epics and 250 Rares. It’ll cost you £23.99 but it’s worth roughly, £80 so it’s a fantastic offer.

Below are the number of cards you get from each Draft Chest depending on which League you finish in. Also included are the chances you have of getting a Legendary (and possibly a second).

With 11 Legendaries in the Game (Current):

  • Challenger I: 101 cards and 26.58% of a Legendary

  • Challenger III: 201 cards and 52.89% of a Legendary
  • Master I: 251 cards and 66.05% of a Legendary
  • Master II: 301 cards and 79.21% of a Legendary
  • Master III: 351 cards and 92.37% of a Legendary
  • Champion: 401 cards, 100% of a Legendary and 5.53% of a second Legendary
  • Grand Champion: 451 cards, 100% of a Legendary and 18.68% of a second Legendary
  • Ultimate Champion: 501 cards, 100% of a Legendary and 31.84% of a second Legendary
